Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1928, this 2-6-0 steam locomotive and many like it were originally used in Mexico to haul sugarcane and passengers on the Ferrocarriles Unidos de Yucatán. Nicknamed "toros de fuego" (Fire bulls) by the locals, these locomotives were used until the late 1960s when the locomotives were retired and resided in the railroad's boneyard. Fortunately, The Walt Disney Company was planning to construct Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and wanted steam trains to circle the park. Carried out by famed Imagineer Roger Broggie and rail historian Gerald M. Best, this locomotive and four others were purchased and shipped to Tampa, Florida where 4 of the 5 locomotives (the 5th was too deteriorated beyond restoration) were refurbished to look like they were built in the 1880s. Finally, these locomotives were given numbers and specific names, this locomotive was given the number 2 and the name Lilly Belle after not only Walt Disney's wife, but also his miniature locomotive he ran in his back yard. The Lilly Belle began operation on the day of the opening of the Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971. Until recent events, the Lilly Belle and its 3 other sibling locomotives hauled 3.7 million annually, making the Walt Disney World Railroad the most popular steam-powered railroad in the world.
