The build is ~98% exact. I made a MOC assembly to replace a 2x2 spring wheelbase (which appears four times); hence the extra parts count. All stickers are missing, too, as well as the correct baseplate.

This set no. 6551 'Checkered Flag 500' came out in 1992 as part of LEGO Town's "Race" sub-theme. Outside North America, the model's name was 'Octan 2000' (while the sub-theme itself appeared as "Racing" in consumer catalogs).

Octan, LEGO's renowned fictional petrol company, itself debuted in 1992, so this set was, ultimately, the first LEGO model to portray "Octan" as a racing sponsor. (Unfortunately, all of these decals are absent in this build.)

With under 200 parts, the 'Checkered Flag 500' managed to pack quite a few features and accessories.

Two buggies, or cross-country racing cars, have identical chassis, featuring a massive rear spoiler and sprung suspensions. (That exact vehicle came out separately, also in '92, in a set no. 6648 'Mag Racer/Octan Rally').

A ground structure, or a finish line, stands on an exclusive 32x32 baseplate (only used in two other LEGO System sets in the '90s). It features barricades to protect spectators (with Octan stickers, again, missing), a grandstand for the race personnel, and a service station underneath with a few tools.

The minifig's cast is quite hilarious, interesting mix-and-match of torsos! One of the crew members wears a traditional waiter's outfit, which is quite awkward. The same applies to a female spectator with a recognizable Pirate's torso. One of the race drivers is Eddie Octane, a Town character introduced in 1988. He wears a "1st-generation" full-white racing outfit.
