This set no. 60048 'Police Dog Unit' came out in 2014 as part of the CITY "Police" theme.

That year, LEGO presented the fourth major "Police" update since the beginnings of CITY, with a complete line-up featuring a brand-new Police Station, a Mobile Police Unit truck, new helicopters, boats, and other vehicles. At 250 pieces and three minifigures, the 'Police Dog Unit' was among the smaller builds.

The 'Police Dog Unit' had several predecessors in earlier generations of CITY "Police," including a smaller 2011 set of the same name. Even more so, this model bears a striking resemblance to the 2012 "Forest Police" line-up—general scene follows the set no. 4441 'Police Dog Van,' while a getaway Hot Rod had stylistic parallels to the 'Robbers' Hideout' no. 4438.

⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎ 'K9' POLICE TRUCK
The vehicle generally matched the 2014 "Police" fleet (most similar to a Pickup Truck towing a Patrol Boat trailer in a set no. 60045 'Police Patrol'). It had excellent design and construction, more detailed and complete—perhaps, my favorite individual "Police" car that year! A dog kennel in the rear has white 4x2 fences as walls and a simple rear hatch (also a ramp for service animals). Perhaps, the sole design flaw is an absence of dedicated holding clips for handcuffs and a flashlight.

⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎ HOT ROD
In stark contrast to Police Truck, the gangster's getaway Hot Rod looked nothing like an ordinary CITY car! The style is very aggressive, with an exposed engine, a vintage 1 x 2 x 2⅔ Sloping Grille, backward-facing cabin doors, and raised rear wheels.

One of my favorite Hot Rod features is a unique flatbed—made of standard Seats (#4079). I remember some "Construction" sets where these molds appeared as mudguards, but I don't think I've ever seen them used like this! Note an excellent windshield design, too, just a single 1x4 dark-transparent brick (like LEGO vehicles used to have back in the early 1980s).

⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎ POLICE DOGS
Two service dogs represented the second generation of this LEGO System animal—part #92586xx introduced in 2011. Modeled after German Shepherds (Alsatians), new dogs replaced part #48812 'Dog / Wolf' (used between 2004 and 2010). The 'Police Dog Unit' also came with a standard Rat (part #40234). All animals even had snacks, a white bone for Police Dogs, and a 1x1 yellow roof tile (slice of cheese) for the rodent. How cute!

⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎⚡︎ BASEMENT HIDEOUT
The tiny building exemplifies the art of LEGO "masonry," laying bricks in such a neat fashion. The cellar window is an excellent feature, too, and I don't remember seeing it in any other CITY sets! The hideout even has a periscope—once again, quite a unique item for a ground structure.

Besides the apparent cash and golden goblets, among the stolen goods is also a bathroom sink faucet! (The mold #13770 that always comes in pearl gold color). That's quite an unusual and flat-out hilarious accessory.
